How to Prepare for an Interview

So, your CV has been accepted and you've be contacted for an interview - what's next? Well, if you're reading this page, you're already off to a good start! Research is a key factor in passing an interview. You have to know what the company is, who their business works, what you'll be doing in your role, etc. At least, you have to have some idea, and anything you don't know you ask in the interview, which demonstrates interest.

Preparation is also key. Revise your CV and memorise in detail your previous experience. Prepare answers to common questions, such as your strengths and weaknesses, and previous experience relevant to the role. Plan your travel schedule the day before, and decide what you're going to wear (suit, tie, smart trousers and smart shoes unless stated otherwise). And also, you need to know why you're applying for the role, how you can benefit the company and what you're looking to get out.

Being clear on these points during an interview situation lets the recruiter know where they stand. Remember, it's not an interrogation so much as it is a negotiation. You have something they want, and they have something you want. Of course, be eager and enthusiastic, but be honest and don't BS. Be confident, clear and intelligent in voice.

And this also applies to your actions and body language, too. When the day of the interview arrives, make sure you're 15 mins early. During the interview, lean forward and look the interviewer in the eye when speaking and listening. Don't look down or away. It's okay to be nervous or make mistakes; that's natural. What's important is that you recover well. If you do get stuck on a question or don't understand what is being asked, tell them that.

If you don't know the answer to something, be honest, but show that you have the capacity and have demonstrated that you're able to learn and pick up what you don't know. Recruiters ask certain questions partially to get a reaction and to gauge what a candidate would do under a stressful or unfamiliar situation. Try to be calm and logical, and relax!
